This sign marks the historic battlefield in Scotland where countless Scottish and English soldiers lost their lives and the Jacobite Rebellion (aka “the Uprising” or just “the ’45”) came to a final and bloody end. Like most other battlefields I’ve visited (which is always decades or even centuries after the fighting has ended), it’s hard for me to imagine such a quiet peaceful and beautiful place being the setting for so much violence and carnage.
